Las Vegas Summer tips
How to beat the heat in Las Vegas

By Zeke Quezada, About.com

Right around the time the mercury squeezes past the three-digit mark I can no longer tolerate the Las Vegas Strip, so I begin to consider alternatives to my usual lifestyle of walking, drinking and gambling along Las Vegas Blvd. You really cannot take the usual stroll down the strip with the pavement melting beneath your feet. While you may try to drink your way from casino to casino that to has it’s disadvantages. The number one problem usually stems from being blasted by the Las Vegas heat as soon as you leave the first bar. Heat and large qualities of alcohol do not mix. If you decide to walk it's best to drink plenty of water.

Start planning your trip to Las Vegas by researching prices with Expedia.com and Southwest Airlines. This should give you a good idea of what you can expect to spend on a Las Vegas vacation.

You can always try the nocturnal Vegas life and see how that goes but since you can only sleep through so many knocks on the door by housekeeping, I figure you might need a few tips to keeping busy and out of the heat on a Las Vegas summer day.

  • Before I had children I wasted time at FAO Schwarz in the Forum Shops at Caesars, now that I have a couple of knuckle draggers roaming around the house I find this toy store a clear waste of money. However, if you wish to blow an afternoon playing with a train set and not getting hassled by anyone this is the place. I never buy anything; I just make my way through all the toys that are begging to be played with. One tip though, do not walk in after having a few drinks. Some of the other parents will frown on the fact that you were able to toss back a few before you picked up the Barbie dolls.

  • You could take advantage of the huge air conditioning system that they have at Circus Circus, in the Adventuredome. With amusement park rides that can thrill you and get you very wet this is a good place to stay cool. Try the boat that seems to drop out of the sky into a puddle of water. You will get soaked.

  • If you find that you just cannot stay away from alcohol on a nice afternoon might I suggest a Margarita at the Border Grill in the Mandalay Bay. Get a seat over looking the Mandalay Beach and waste an afternoon away in a Tequila haze. You also get an eyeful of some of the very best work cosmetic surgery has to offer. The pool at Mandalay is always a magnet for the synthetic people on the planet.

  • Have some refreshing Sangria at Cafe Ba Ba Reba at Fashion Show Mall across from the Wynn Hotel.
  • Speaking of pools, the lazy rivers at the Mandalay Bay, Monte Carlo, Wynn Las Vegas and others are one of the best places to remain outside and stay cool in the middle of summer in Las Vegas. There is a trick to this however, as most of these hotels do not allow you to use these pools unless you’re a guest. So part of the adventure is finding and meeting someone who will smuggle you in for the day. It’s very possible, just grab a raft, a drink and your new friends and the day is set.

  • If you enjoy people watching I would suggest the lounge at Bellagio located next to the registration lobby. Here you can watch all the people who have enough cash to book a room at Bellagio. Always a fun filled afternoon of gawking, laughing and feeling sorry for the fashion challenged. If you have the money to book a room at Bellagio, eat at Olives and get a table near the shopping area so that people can gawk at you.
