I go to Las Vegas every February and stay at the Flamingo. I don't know what the article is talking about the line to check in. I had checked in at the airport a couple of years ago but now check in at the Flamingo Hotel. It was very fast, and the people are extremely helpful. I also disagree with the statement of "maze of hallways". The whole hotel is a U shape. How hard is that. After the first day when you find the closest elevator you are good. Nothing is so relaxing as being able to hang out on the grounds. Incredible!
The busy strip on one side of the hotel and peace on the other side.

I will never stay at any of those huge places it takes you 20 minutes to get to the street. If anything ever happens to the Flamingo that changes the current set up, I will stay downtown.
Anyway, I would recommend the Flamingo to anyone. If you do have any problem at all, report it to the front desk and they are more than happy to accommodate you. The internet charge did irk me. Really? how much time do you spend in your room. The charge is steep just to check you email and maybe chat with your family for a few minutes.
