What it’s like?: There is a small restaurant in Key West that has some of the best Masas de Puerco(Tender chunks of pork) north of Cuba. That is understandable considering that the shores of the Caribbean nation are less than a 100 miles away. The Florida Café in the Southern Nevada desert rivals the best Cuban food anywhere and can stand up easily to the best in the States.
The down side is that you have to travel north on the strip to get the restaurant. It is a $12 taxi ride from the strip or about a 15 minute bus ride from the bus stop near Circus Circus.
How’s the food? If you feel like doing a little Cuban breakfast make sure to have the potato balls with Picadillo. Of course they come with Cuban toast that can, make your heart stop it is so good. The ham croquetas and eggs will make you long for a brisk morning walk along the streets of Havana.
I have mentioned the Masas de Puerco and they are a wonderful combination of crisp outside and tender juicy inside, at least try the appetizer if nothing else. Other things that are on the must try list include: Pierna de Puerco Asada, Ropa Vieja and Fricase de Pollo Empanizado. Every dish that I have tried is alive with genuine, authentic, Cuban flavors.
