“Love Me” - The view through the glass of two words written over and over captivated me. A simple powerful message painted, written and presented for the interpretation of the Las Vegas viewing public. The artist, Curtis Kulig, didn’t have to say much for me to instantly be drawn to his personality. It might be the hearts on the walls or the raw space or just the way he stood there explaining his good fortune. Like “Love Me” Curtis Kulig is a refreshing individual who just so happens to be on to something with a positive message that can be conveyed through his art.
Questions With Curtis Kulig:
How does your residency in Las Vegas at the Cosmopolitan Hotel fit into your plans?
It put me out of my comfort zone but in my own bubble. I’ve been very productive here and met a lot of new people. Sometimes I feel like I know everyone in New York, so it's nice to be a stranger in a strange land but that only lasted for a few days.
Is it possible to be creative with an audience a few feet away?
Everyone asks what's next all the time... I’ve been experimenting but for right now it's more about shifting mediums than changing the message.
Your art is approachable, it is understandable and it cuts across so many generations. What is your message for young artists, the 15 year old kid who loves art but has not yet found exactly how to express himself?
Find something you like and do it over and over again. Whether that's music or art or writing or anything, really if you do it enough times, people will start to notice.
What does the young you explain to the older more mature you?
The young me says don't screw it up. The old me says shut up you don't know what you're talking about.
Sandwiched between the public art at CityCenter to the south, the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art to the north and the garage art below you at Cosmopolitan, how does Las Vegas stack up as an emerging art city?
I think that Vegas is sort of a transient place and there's so many people who come in and out that being exposed to art, making it super accessible & unintimidating is great. Plus Dave Hickey lives here.
Your preference, a public installation, a famous gallery or on a street in an otherwise unknown neighborhood? There's a tiny one on a broken step in Jamaica... that one's my favorite
Curtis Kulig and his art are on display at the P3 Studio at the Cosmopolitan though February 15, 2012. Stop in and say hello. Be careful though, you might want to start posting Love Me stickers on everything.
"For me photos are more about your interaction with someone than anything else and that's what makes a great photograph. that's why I especially love Polaroids- they're no frills... well also because I'm impatient in general and like the instant gratification" - Curtis Kulig.
