About the show: Gerry McCambridge's show is intended to baffle. He begins by calling eight volunteers on stage: seven are handed envelopes, the other is given a phone book. He next asks an audience member to choose a page number in the phone book, and another to select a column on that page. Then, he asks the phone-book holder to run a finger down the chosen column on the given page and select a phone number. Finally, the envelopes are opened. In each case, the phone number chosen matches that in the sealed envelope.
How does he do that? It's a question you'll ask yourself throughout the show. "As the entertainer, my job is to entertain you by screwing with your heads," McCambridge explains. And that is the crux of mentalism - the show revolves around suspending disbelief. McCambridge received his first magic kit at age 8, and went on to study comedy, psychology and statistics. He draws on all of this training for his act, which has taken him to onto television, with a one-hour prime time special in 2004, as well as spots on Phenomenon, Late Night With David Letterman, The Today Show and more.
The mixture of comedy, magic and mental manipulation keeps the audience on their toes, wondering if they'll be the subject of McCambridge's next trick. Is mentalism for real? By the end of the evening, you may just be convinced.
