What it's like: With the Sands demolished, the Stardust gone and nearly every other iconic destination of old-school Las Vegas having faced - or about to face - the wrecking ball, the Fireside Lounge at the Peppermill practically deserves a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. It's one of the rare standalone establishments on the Strip, rather than located inside a hotel.
Pass through the Peppermill Coffee Shop, where they sling straight-up diner fare 24 hours a day, until the lighting drops so low you need night vision. When your eyesight adjusts, you'll feel like you're in the nightclub from Saturday Night Fever - all that's missing is a dance floor lit from below. The real draw, however, is the club's namesake: a fireplace pit in the middle of the room, its flames surrounded by a retro-fabulous pool of water.
Snag a spot by the fire, let a waitress in an evening gown bring you a gimlet or similar retro cocktail festooned with fruit garnish and paper umbrella, and relax as the '70s-era soundtrack (all Barry White and wah-wah guitars) washes over you. Given the Fireside's fabulous atmosphere, it's not surprising that it gets crowded on occasion, but large parties are rare. Instead, it remains one of Las Vegas' great date destinations, constantly singled out by local media as one of the best make-out spots in town.
Suggestions: Despite the standard range of bar offerings, you may want to sample something old-school like a mai-tai.
