What it's like: In 1953, founders Les Highet and Erma Hueneke had a dream: a restaurant that would serve pancakes all the time. More than half a century later, the Original Pancake House has come a long way from its first location in a clapboard house in Portland, Oregon. The chain boasts more than 100 restaurants from coast to coast. The James Beard Foundation designated the chain's hometown headquarters (the original Original Pancake House) a regional landmark restaurant.
The Original Pancake House makes everything from scratch, toppings included, using the highest-quality butter, whole-fat whipping cream, grade AA eggs and even their own yeast starter. So it's not surprising that converts speak about the Original Pancake House like it's a religion, singing the praises of favorites like the airy Dutch baby, a souffle-style dish served with lemon, and the orange-liqueur crepes. The apple pancake is another favorite, a buttery mound of baked apples glazed with cinnamon sugar. And that's just the sweet stuff. Original Pancake House is also a mecca for egg lovers, who swear by the spicy Spanish omelette and the oven-puffed mushroom omelette laced with sherry
Suggestions: The Original Pancake House is the most kid-friendly restaurant at Green Valley Ranch, and most dishes are big enough to be shared.
