About Menopause the Musical: A taboo topic like menopause set to music? Even for those of us women who have yet to experience "the change," it's a humorous primer on what's to come.
Menopause the Musical debuted in a small theater in Orlando in 2001. It's since played in more than 100 cities and 11 countries. Clearly, what was once a silent rite of passage is now loud and proud. The show took the stage at Las Vegas Hilton in February 2006.
Menopause the Musical centers on four women with different personalities - the professional, the Earth mother, the Iowa housewife and soap star - all united by "the change." They meet in the lingerie department of "Bloomies" while fighting over lingerie, and seem to have little in common. But as the women discover, they're not so different after all. The ladies go on to compare stories of hot flashes, memory loss, sleeplessness, weight gain, mood swings and more.
"It seems like just yesterday I was captain of the cheerleading team at Dixon High," sighs the Iowa housewife. "Now I feel like captain of the Titanic. What a sinking feeling."
The singing is spectacular, and 28 parodies of songs from the '60s and '70s maintain the show's fast pace. From "Puff, My God I'm Draggin'" to "Stayin' Awake," the genuinely clever lyrics and charming dialogue put a humorous face on menopause and the concept of aging. Menopause the Musical gives a voice to the baby boomer generation, proclaiming they will speak openly about and even satirize the aging process, rather than quietly accept it in the way their parents did.
The audience primarily consists of middle-aged women - along with a few dedicated, chuckling husbands. Judging by the roaring laughter, it's clear that this musical doesn't mince words about menopause. Indeed, it's spot on, right down to the last song, "YMCA," when audience members are invited onstage to sing, dance and celebrate. And they do just that, filling the stage and dancing in the aisles.
