About the Fremont Hotel and Casino: The Fremont defined downtown Las Vegas when it opened as the city's first high-rise in 1956 (Mr. Las Vegas himself, Wayne Newton, launched a career in the Fremont's erstwhile Carousel Showroom). Recent renovations have added some boutique-hotel touches and modernized the 447 rooms, but the Fremont remains an inexpensive hub from which to explore this old-school slice of the city. Its red-neon facade is one of the most recognizable sights in Las Vegas.

Pricing: Room rates vary by date and size, but range from about $40 to $99 for a double.

Dining: Brave lines at the Paradise Buffet to load up on all-you-can-eat standards. Tony Roma's, famous for ribs, is a landmark attraction, while the Second Street Grill specializes in Asian-inspired seafood fare like seared scallops or Thai-style fried snapper, and a few oddball favorites, such as Peking duck.

Entertainment: If you're down on your luck at the Fremont's 32,000-square-foot casino, take advantage of your unbeatable proximity to the Fremont Street Experience, a multimedia light-and-music extravaganza projected after dark on a canopy 90 feet above street level.
