About the Ellis Island Casino and Brewery: In a city where bigger is always better, family-run Ellis Island Casino and Brewery, located about a block off the Strip, seems almost quaint -- and it's one of the best-kept secrets in town. There's no hotel, but the world's largest Super 8 Motel is right next door. The casino is on the small side, but the real draws here are free bingo, nightly karaoke, house-brewed ales and a 24-hour restaurant with reasonable prices.
Dining: Round-the-clock Ellis Island Restaurant has the kind of deals that Las Vegas used to be known for: $10.99 prime rib, $4 breakfasts and an under-$7 sirloin steak platter that's not on the menu -- you have to know to ask. Sample the all-natural house-brewed beers or try the brewery's own root beer for dessert with a scoop of ice cream.
Entertainment: The casino may be unimpressive by Las Vegas standards, but you'll still find 350 gaming machines (from slots to video poker) along with roulette, blackjack and a sports book. Singers, take note: Ellis Island's laser karaoke (which gets consistent props in the local press) runs every night from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., and has attained something of a cult status on the dive-bar karaoke circuit.
