Location: Le Bistro Theatre at the Riviera
2901 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, Nev. 89109
About the show: In America's Diamond Live, Jay White sings Neil Diamond's songs so blue you'd think it was the man himself. And if you don't believe it, just ask Diamond's mother, Rose, who has attended White's show several times. "After the show was over, she came out of the showroom and she put her hands up to her face and she said, 'Oh my god, you're just like my son!'" White recalls.
Judging from his performance, it's no surprise. White has an uncanny likeness of Diamond, from his baritone vocals to his body language and his shiny wardrobe.
According to the show's website, Diamond himself has proclaimed White to be his favorite tribute artist. Years ago, White met Diamond backstage at the MGM Grand, and asked him to autograph a photo. Diamond couldn't determine whether the photo was of himself or of White, and wrote "Only Memorex can tell." In an interview shortly after, Diamond was asked what he thought of the tribute artists. "I've heard a few of them and I'm always complimented by their efforts and dedication," he's quoted on White's website, "but my favorite is a young man named Jay White."
Diamond's own band members have performed with White. Percussionist and Las Vegas resident King Errisson can be seen gracing the stage, and the audience, regularly.
White has spent more than two decades dedicating himself to Neil Diamond, nine of which were spent starring in "Legends in Concert." He has performed more than 8,000 shows in five countries, and gathered an impressive following along the way - evident by the nightly line to get into his show. Female fans cheer and scream like schoolgirls as White breaks into hits like "Cracklin Rosie," "Sweet Caroline," "Cherry, Cherry" and, of course "America."
Turns out Le Bistro Theatre is the perfect spot for an up-close, hanky-waving view. Each seat in this older showroom is close to the action, making for an intimate concert.
The charismatic White builds a rapport with the audience throughout the show, inviting them to sing along with nearly half the songs. All the while, he remains staunchly in character. The show feels like a giant karaoke session, so come prepared to participate in Jay White's musical tribute.
