Tacos are near and dear to my heart. Not only did tacos get me through college they are who I am. It's as if I was born with a tortilla in my hand. I can put anything in a taco and call it a meal. I 'd like to think I know a good taco when I taste one. This gets me to my enchantment with Tacos El Gordo on the Las Vegas strip. I am a huge fan. It would seem that when ever I step in to this stripside mecca of cheap eats that I am transported to the streets of Rosarito, Mexico where the smell of wood combined with sizzling beef fill the air. It has always been very good.
I walked in with a good friend and genuine Food Critic from Dallas, Texas. He's had his share of tacos all across the country and in tiny places both far and wide across the globe. I was sure he'd love them as much as I do.
I want to tell you this ended well. I want to tell you that he was standing on his head in amazement at how good these tacos were. However, he was not. In fact when I had a bite of five different tacos it was as if they had replaced all my favorite flavors with some very average and in a couple of cases below average ingredients. Devastated!
So, what does a food writer do in order to be fair. I went back a few times after that only to find that what I loved was still there. How? Did they have one bad day? It's possible. It is also very possible that we went in on the one day when they were off their game and before dinner but way after lunch so maybe some of the product was sitting around for a little too long. Whatever the case maybe, I still think it is one of the best tacos in town but I'm not sure I want to go out on a limb and say it is the very best anymore.
